Throughout his long career in Congress, Senator Robert C. Byrd penned a regular column titled Byrd's Eye View that ran in newspapers across West Virginia. The columns were one way in which the Senator shared news from Washington D.C. with constituents. In this January, 1965 column, Senator Byrd details new information derived from the Advisory Committee on Smoking and Health's report to the Surgeon General regarding the regarding the health effects of smoking and other tobacco use. Byrd also highlights the federal government's support for research on the effects of cigarette smoking on health and Americans' smoking habits.
